A Menorca apartment where British legacy fuses with Spanish craft

While the island is well-known for its sprawling vinas, typical Menorca farmhouses, the capital of Mahón retains the Georgian codes of British architecture. In the 18th century, the Brits backed Archduke Charles of Austria against his Bourbon rival Phillip V in the Spanish War of Succession and walked away from the peace treaty with Gibraltar and Menorca.

Though Spain would eventually reabsorb the island, buildings like this apartment still bear the mark of that British heritage.

The large sitting room on the first floor has the typical English sash windows and antique Victorian tiles in the floor. The decoration is in sync with the young owners’ cosmopolitan aesthetic: Picasso-inspired paintings and Art Deco furnishings complete the look.

Built in the style of terraced town house, the house takes up the two floors and the front door opens right onto the street. The modest exteriors belie the artfully curated residence within.

Their eclectic curation continues in the dining room with Persian rugs mix with French Brutalist furniture. The white walls reflect the glorious Mediterranean light back around the house, keeping the dark wooden furnishings from feeling somber.

Wall tiles and decorative pottery create a rustic vibe in the kitchen

Though we are in town, the kitchen has a rustic charm.  A smooth green tiled backsplash intensifies the vibrant tomato-red of the painted cabinets below in what almost feels like an ‘Almodóvarian’ aesthetic. While the Spanish director is known for his emotionally wrenching plots, many cinephiles go to the theatre to enjoy his bold interiors.

Out of the kitchen door, we spy the seating area of the terrace and those classic Mediterranean terracotta-tiled roofs etched against the clear blue sky. “It could be Tangier,” one of the owners muses.

From this vantage point, diners can watch the peaceful seaport town wake up with the rising sun.

Further into the kitchen, those same green tiles creep up the wainscot. Fruit bowls, a teapot, and other everyday items remind us that this is in fact a place where the couple cooks and entertains.

Wooden furnishings, full flower vases, small paintings and decorative Spanish ceramic plates create a layered look, without feeling staged.

Hand-painted in southern Spain, these large decorative plates take inspiration from 13th century chargers. Our Rayas Wall Plate is typical of this style.

Painted in cobalt blue with accents etched with an ultra-fine brush, the design balances the geometric pattern on the border with a playful floral motif in the center.

Our vintage and antique plates bear that unmistakable patina that only time can lend to an object.

Antique “Rayas” Ceramic Wall Plate
€198.00

Hand-thrown and hand-painted in southeastern Spain, this large decorative plate boasts the shape of the classic 13th century Valencian charger.

The composition — well-defined rim, border and center — is another tell. Inspired by 13th century Valencian lusterware, artisans continued to rework the same patterns for centuries after. Here the painter takes inspiration from the typical lusterware plate where the border features a geometric pattern of decorative elements – lines or miniscule flowers – that radiate outward from the center.

Painted in cobalt blue with accents etched with an ultra-fine brush, the design balances the geometric pattern on the border with a playful floral motif in the center.

Dimensions: 31.5 cm in diameter x 4 cm deep

*Hanging your decorative plate: This product includes a wall plate hanger
