Round Decorative Serving Bowls in Blue

An Enduring Cultural Legacy

This large serving bowl is a direct descendant of the Hispano-Arab ataifor, a deep dish meant for communal use at the table.

Though a variety of shapes existed, this style is one of the earliest examples, dating back to Spain’s caliphate era.

Virtually unchanged since its introduction to the peninsula, this round bowl has a semi-hemispheric body stood on a round foot.

Table etiquette of the day called for sharing food from a single vessel with guests serving themselves with their hands. Plates, as we know them today, would not make their appearance until the late 13th century.

A Treasured Collector’s Item

Decorated inside and out, this striking bowl still boasts the intricate vegetal and geometric patterns derived from the Hispano-Arab lineage.

The earliest ataifor serving bowls show green and brown-black decoration — the color palette favored by the nobility when the caliphate sat in Córdoba.

Blue and white would later come to the define the last kingdom of al-Andalus or Granada.

Valued for both their aesthetic and historical significance, these bowls may be used at the table or to decorate a splendid wall display.

Tucked in the foot, a small hole permits hanging.
