Curated art and antiques enrich this Menorca farmhouse

Ceramic plates and Spanish azulejo tile decorate the rustic kitchen in this 18th century Menorca house

Perched on a hill, this typical Menorca farmhouse radiates Mediterranean ease. Sat between centenarian pine trees, amid a lush landscape of lavender, rockrose, and prickly pear, this historic residence has become an oasis for this family of globetrotting art collectors.

“It’s high up on a hill and there are no other buildings nearby,” one of the owners explains.

Neighboring farms are teaming with life as animals graze languidly and take shelter in the old prehistoric caves under the estate.

Despite the expansive pastures and Mediterranean curtain all around, the island hardly feels isolated.

Located some 150 miles off the mainland, Menorca has enjoyed an enduring cultural exchange with the peninsula —especially Levante and Andalucía—England and Italy. Its vibrant and eclectic culture continues to draw a diverse crowd of globetrotters who have finally found a place they’d like to call home.

Decorative plates and wall tiles energize this rustic kitchen

Though relaxed is the vibe, a discerning eye will notice that the rooms are artfully curated. Antiques mix with modern pieces, local pieces mingle with imports.

And while the owners continue to grow their collection, no room feels like a depot. Instead they’ve carefully selected the pieces that showcase a blend of the family’s tastes.

The kitchen, a Mediterranean dream where generous sunlight streams in through the large windows and makes the interiors sparkle, is a perfect showcase of their eclectic style.

Here, a teardrop chandelier hangs above industrial chairs. The tile mosaic that covers the backsplash is a mix of styles — some in traditional cobalt blue and others in polychrome designs — all featuring a rosette motif.

Open shelving is risky business unless it’s as well curated as this space. Here, the shelves hold a mix of decorative plates and utilitarian pieces. Blue ceramics featuring a lively yellow accent, typical of pottery traditions in eastern Spain, brighten the whitewashed walls.

Named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993, Menorca remains the wild forest island that has captivated many peoples since Antiquity. In fact, this old farmhouse sits opposite the Talaiotic ruins of Talatí de Dalt, a prehistoric civilization known for its mortar-free stone buildings. Islanders continue to use this centenarian savoir faire for dry stone walls on the farms.

A lebrillo and damajuana decorate the outdoor dining seating area

Coastal living on Mediterranean is synonymous with the outdoor dining.

In keeping with local Balearic tradition, the renovation on the house used marés, a local sandstone, and terracotta for flooring as we see on the patio. Two seating areas share a pergola that allows for some exquisite views of the stars at night.

The whitewashed walls of the exterior of the home are both an aesthetic and practical choice in this hot climate. area where

Given that glass blowing is an ancient craft of the Balearic Islands, it is fitting to see so many damajuanas and azure blue bottles throughout the house. Damajuana, or dame-jeanne in France, was once chiefly used to age and transport wine and oil. Typically made in green, blue or amber-brown, this balloon glass bottle retains a rustic charm.

Tucked in next to the damajuana on the patio is a colorful Spanish lebrillo. Like the damajuana, this large flat-bottomed bowl has outgrown its utilitarian role. Made in different styles across the mainland and on the Balearic Islands, this Spanish has become a collector’s darling.
