Painted in a vivid green over white glaze, this wide-rimmed plate bears our most emblematic motif: granada or pomegranate. 

According to some historians, the Romans named the city of Granada after the Latin granatum or pomegranate, a fruit-bearing tree abundant in the area. Others credit the phonetic evolution of the Arabic "gar-anat," meaning 'hill of pilgrims.'

The pomegranate grows well in arid conditions. Its tough skin protects it from drying, making it a perfect survival food that could feed caravans traveling long journeys.

The resilient fruit tree may have been a staple for the desert people who conquered Andalucía in the 8th century. 

Now abundant in the region, the pomegranate has become an enduring symbol of Granada’s culture. Fajalauza ceramics pay homage to that heritage with myriad variations in design.

Hand-crafted in southern Spain, this green Garza Fajalauza Plate features motifs from its native Andalusian landscape. A gray heron or garza real sits among pomegranate branches, pecking at a closed bud.  The walls of the plate are covered in a concentric pattern resembling sea shells.

Painted in our most traditional green, this plate is hand-thrown and hand-painted in a small family-run workshop.

The wide rim of the plage features a pattern of overlapping arches that run above equidistant torretas, a motif that looks like small towers.

Hand-painted in southern Spain, this wide-rimmed Fajalauza plate takes inspiration for the Andalusian pastoral landscape. Espigas or the golden hulled spikes of cereals growing in the field, cover the base of the plate. The rim of the plate features undulating rows that look like the steady work of a plow.

This green Arábica Fajalauza plate is a classic example of Moorish heritage of this ceramic tradition. The Fajalauza ceramic tradition marked an inflection point in Andalusian society: the end of Moorish rule and the reign of the Catholic monarchs. 

While every sector adapted to this shift, Moorish techniques and aesthetics persisted. Fajalauza artisans remain faithful to the Moorish penchant for horror vacui, or all-over decoration, vegetal motifs, geometric patterns and calligraphy.
