Traditional Uses of The Spanish Lebrillo
The origin of these splendid glazed terracotta lebrillo, known as Fajalauza, can be traced back to the early 16th century. These unpretentious yet traditional vessels have become iconic symbols of Spanish culture, cherished for their connection to everyday life and their role in domestic use. Almost every household in owned one or more, their numbers varying according to the household's size.
These ceramics held great significance for families, passed down from one generation to another as precious heirlooms. If, by any unfortunate circumstance, they broke, they were lovingly repaired with staples, never to be discarded.

Rustic Decorative Lebrillo Bowls are available in diameter 35cm - 80 cm
Valued for their versatility in the household, large lebrillos were once used as washing basins and to mix ingredients in the kitchen. Now, these intricate designs and colorful motifs adorn the walls and gardens of many homes.
The hand-painted lebrillo holds immense value among collectors as these exceptional pieces chronicle the rich cultural heritage of Spain, its Moorish heritage and craft traditions.
Immersed in the artistic traditions of southern Spain, our skilled artisan partners make and then paint each lebrillo by hand, making every one of them a unique creation with its own distinct personality.
Lebrillo Wall Mounts & Floor Stands
Our wall mounts use the traditional tripod structure and they are custom-made by a small ironsmith workshop.
Due to the artisanal nature of ceramics, each lebrillo differs slightly in height and girth by a fraction.
In order to customize each wall mount for its corresponding lebrillo, we recommend purchasing both the lebrillo and wall mount at the same time. The ironsmith will use your specific lebrillo to make sure its wall mount wraps tightly around the piece and holds it securely in place.
Lebrillos are often hung separately or as part of display wall in the home or garden.
While we may still use a lebrillo as a fruit bowl, this enduring symbol of Spanish culture has become a beloved item among collectors and home décor lovers. Learn more about our lebrillos.

Hand-crafted in a small family-run workshop in Southern Spain, the Estornino traditional lebrillo is a testament to Fajalauza commitment to craftsmanship.
This hand-painted lebrillo showcases the graceful estornino or spotless starling, a native Andalusian songbird. Take a stroll in Trinidad Square in Granada during the evening hours and you'll be treated to an enchanting spectacle as a grand assembly of starlings takes center stage with their melodious performances.
In this picturesque scene, our starling perches gracefully on a branch of the pomegranate tree, another recurring motif in Fajalauza ceramics. The lebrillo’s walls are adorned with an intricate pattern of seashells.
As with all our Fajalauza stoneware, our skilled artisans make each item with care and precision using enduring techniques that go back to the 16th century. Here, the artist has lingered over the details on the feathers of the starling.
Lebrillos have historically been in a variety of ways in the home – as mixing bowls in the kitchen, as fruit bowls on the table, or even as laundry basins before the running water was a commonplace thing throughout the south.
This enduring symbol of Spanish culture has become a beloved item among collectors. Beyond their utilitarian roles, our Fajalauza lebrillos adorn walls and shelves or add a decorative accent to the garden.
