Rustic lebrillos bring contrast to this haute minimalist abode in Sydney’s Palm Beach

Perched on the tree-lined waterfront, this lovely villa in Sydney’s Palm Beach suburb is a tranquil haven just 40 kilometers from the city center.

A Spanish lebrillo wall decorates the foyer of this waterfront Syndey home

The natural beauty of the landscape pours into the house through wide windows in the perimeter rooms and through the glass doors in the interior. In a way, the sights are themselves a form of décor.

In keeping with the peaceful atmosphere here on the Northern Beaches, the owners have made a careful selection of furnishings that bring color and texture to an otherwise subdued palette.

Minimalist wicker sofas and chairs upholstered in crisp white fabric sit on a woolen Moroccan rug with a simple geometric pattern in red that adds contrast to this palette of neutrals.

A pair of ottomans with carved legs in dark wood flank the fireplace. On the mantle, we find a collection of small dame jeanne jugs wrapped in their traditional wicker shell.

Spanish lebrillos welcome guests into the foyer

Perhaps the most eye-catching display is the grand Spanish lebrillo wall in the entrance hall. The stunning gallery extends upward past the stairway that leads to the rooms on the second floor. Arranged in an asymmetrical pattern, the display boasts eight large decorative bowls of various sizes.

The last bowl perched at eye level strikes a perfect balance with the two terracotta lamps standing on either side.

Ramita Traditional Spanish Lebrillo
from €260.00

Carefully hand-painted in small batches in an artisan workshop in southern Spain, our Ramita Traditional Spanish Lebrillo takes inspiration from the region’s beautiful flora.

A large pomegranate branch bearing a flower fans out across the surface of the base while the walls bear a design of undulating motifs.

Our artisans carefully make and paint each piece by hand using 16th century old techniques. And, though Spanish culture has changed a great deal since Moorish rule, many of the motifs that characterize Fajalauza ceramics have stood the test of time.

Inspired by the Andalusian landscape, lebrillos and other Fajalauza pieces feature the granada or pomegranate, sunflowers, daisies, palms, peacocks and native songbirds.

Most of the lebrillo bowls in this tableau feature variations on the Ramita design. Hand-painted in green, this pattern shows the flamboyant pomegranate flower in the center. The lebrillo's walls are painted from base to rim in an abstract motif.

Once a venerable household washing basin, this decorative bowl lends a rustic flair to homes and gardens.

Ramita also comes in a more fecund version we call Rama. When done with a limewash effect on the border, this rustic terracotta basin has the distinctive look of finely aged vintage pottery.

Besides playing with scale to create interest, this lebrillo wall includes an element of surprise to this Ramita pattern. At the level of the first floor landing, a large Gavilla design draws the eye upward.

Handpainted in green over white glaze, the Gavilla design shows a large sunflower bouquet sprawled over the base. A pattern of concentric undulating lines adorn the walls.

Gavilla Traditional Spanish Lebrillo
from €260.00

Handpainted in green over white glaze, this Green Gavilla Traditional Spanish Lebrillo features a large sunflower bouquet on the base. A pattern of concentric undulating lines adorn the walls.

While most of our lebrillo bowls feature an unglazed terracotta rim, this Gavilla design has a tin-white border.

Before the turn of the century, the lebrillo was an essential part of the furnishings of every Spanish household. Large bowls served as laundry sinks; small bowls worked for a variety of tasks in the kitchen.

Characterized by its distinctive patterns and vibrant colors, the Fajalauza lebrillo is now a beloved decorative bowl. This once humble household utensil adorns the walls and gardens of modern homes, restaurants and hotels.

Though sparse, the décor in this Sydney home is intentional.

The limewashed walls stand out against colorful accents in rugs, upholstery, and ceramics. A good deal of masonry cabinetry allows for ample storage tucked in the walls, which makes the already spacious home feel palatial.

Though we are in Austrialia, the owners have incorporated architectural elements from across the Mediterranean.

Beyond the lebrillo wall and dame jeannes in the sitting room, we find a small indoor courtyard that recalls the riad gardens of Morocco. Colorful ceramic tiles brighten the small space where palm trees stretch up toward the sky.

Teal, amber, chocolate, and red tiles peak out of the tan terracotta floor.

Although solid square tiles are simple in structure, they offer endless variety in design. Here the tesserae create a perfect grid. The lines direct the eye from end of the room to the other, making the small and narrow courtyard feel commodious.
