“The house in Menorca is a mishmash of things, but there is a connecting thread,” the owner reflects. With stunning views over the port of Mahón, this house of is blend of modern art, rustic pottery and fine textiles.
This charming hand-painted bowl features a delicate floral pattern of pomegranate buds in the center and an abstract motif resembling sea shells along the edge. These motifs fit within the traditional Moorish elements found in art and architecture in southern Spain.
This fuente semillana - a flat-bottomed vessel that falls somewhere between a deep bowl and a plate - is a traditional piece of crockery in Andalusian homes. This small serving bowl is a direct descendant of the Moorish ataifor - a large serving bowl with straight walls that usually occupied the center of the table.

This kind of fuente semillana are often used to create wall displays alongside traditional Spanish lebrillos, another emblematic Spanish ceramic piece, that has become a favorite among collectors.

Spanish plates decorate the Georgian-style dining room
The family who split their time between London and Spain fit perfectly in this globetrotter’s haven. They may come for the azure waters and rocky coves of this forest island but they stay for the community. In Mahón, the buoyant modern art scene complements local traditional craft, British influences from their erstwhile occupation of the island meld with autochthonous styles.
The dining room above boasts the original Georgian stucco on the walls that was so characteristic of 18th century British architecture. In this sparsely decorated room, a set of antique plates hang on the walls.
Handmade in Spain, this glazed earthenware plate features polychromatic decoration in blue, green, yellow, orange, and maroon. A parladot, a bird motif common in Valencian pottery, sits in the center. Popular in aristocratic 13th century lusterware, this bird motif has become a mainstay in Spanish pottery made in the southeast.
Step back and you’ll notice that the bird sits within a heptagram. Each vertices of this 7-point star bears a fringed motif that frames a colorful vegetal motif similar to a reed.

A curious set of ceramic bowls filled with ripe fruit and luscious vegetables, also done in clay, decorate the kitchen island. These charming oddities or platos de engaño were all the rage in the 18th century, especially in the now defunct Alcora factory.
The kitchen backsplash sits in great contrast to this bit of whimsy. Done in cobalt blue and white, its cool surface is both aesthetic and totally practical in this hot climate.
Mallorcan ikat fabric and Spanish knot carpets elevate this guest room
Much of the renovation focused on stripping away layers to restore the old structure. The renovated ceiling in this guest room shows the original color in all its faded grandeur.
Covered in a patchwork of textiles, the custom daybed makes for perfect guest accommodation. The footrest upholstered in roba de llengües, ikat textile typical of the Balearic Islands. A colorful Spanish knot rug featuring bird and floral motifs runs underfoot.
Hand-thrown and hand-painted in southeastern Spain, this large decorative plate boasts the shape of the classic 13th century Valencian charger.
The composition — well-defined rim, border and center — is another tell. Inspired by 13th century Valencian lusterware, artisans continued to rework the same patterns for centuries after. Here the painter takes inspiration from the typical lusterware plate where the border features a geometric pattern of decorative elements – lines or miniscule flowers – that radiate outward from the center.
Painted in cobalt blue with accents etched with an ultra-fine brush, the design balances the geometric pattern on the border with a playful floral motif in the center.
