Tucked away in Cuenca, this estate blends the ineffable charm of the French country home while honoring its Spanish heritage.

Decorative lebrillo bowls deck the ancient halls
The renovation aimed to preserve the essence of the original architecture and ground the home in its verdant surroundings by bringing elements of nature inside. Materials such stone, wood, natural textiles, and ceramics lend a feeling of serenity to the interiors.
One of the most stunning details of the architecture is the reclamation of the red brick structure that now frames the arched doorways and some of the interior walls.
The furnishings throughout this house also pay homage to its Spanish heritage. A set of large ceramic lebrillo bowls and pots decorate the table in the hallway. Hand-painted in the traditional green, these large bowls feature the Ramita design. For a variation on the same theme, see our Rama design for lebrillos.
While we can hang these decorative bowls as wall display, very old and delicate antique pieces often perch on a floor stand.
French country style blends with Spanish sensibility in this country home
Those enthralled by the French countryside will immediately spot the inspirations in this Spanish home.
Perhaps one of the charms of the country home is its balance of old and new. Borrowing this maxim, the owners have exercised restraint during the renovation. They kept the very high ceilings in the sitting room with its exposed wooden beams while other areas of the house show a more modern look.
A lived-in relaxed atmosphere prevails here with natural wood paneling and muted tones. Layered rugs add warmth and an ensemble of antique furnishings mix well with newer sofas for maximum comfort. We spy a cosy fireplace — another country home must — in the library.
Our Rama Traditional Spanish Lebrillo comes in green and in blue. Our devoted artisans make and paint each piece by hand.
In keeping with traditional Fajalauza motifs, our lebrillos feature the flora of the Andalusian landscape and geometric motifs descended from the Nasrid era.
The Rama lebrillo features a large pomegranate flower in the center. Curving branches bearing smaller blooms form a wreath covering the entire base of the vessel. An undulating pattern covers the walls of the bowl from base to rim.
Once a venerable household washing basin, this flat-bottomed bowl now serves a decorative purpose in many homes and gardens. Intricate in its design and unique in shape, the lebrillo is often displayed along with another flat-bottomed vessel, the fuente semillana.

Hand-painted decorative tiles adorn the fireplace
In the library, the fireplace immediately draws the eye.
Decorated in blue and white tiles, the fireplace surround show a bevy of animal patterns to match the prized deer head hung above. Inspired by the 16th century boom of Chinese kraakware, this style of classic blue and white tiles spread across Europe from the Netherlands to the United Kingdom to Spain.
A common feature in homes in Spain and the Maghreb, this style of ceramic tile features prominently in kitchens, chimneys and staircases.
Elsewhere in the room, we find more decorative use of pottery. Squat vessels with small handles sit on a lower shelf. Above French pots in green add a lovely bit of color. An eclectic mix of sensible wooden furnishings complete the look.

The mission of this renovation was clearly to create a tranquil abode where rest and relaxation would be the priority. Soft textiles and a soothing color palette rely on the natural tones of organic materials. Still, the eye travels happily throughout the house as owners have sprinkled bits of color in every room. A vibrant blue bathes the fireplace in the library; warm tones show as accents in the curation in the upholstered chairs.
