Traditional Lebrillos
Handmade in Granada, home of Fajalauza ceramics, El Carmen Spanish Traditional Lebrillo features a striking design that recalls the lush courtyard or "carmen" Andalusian homes.
A large sunflower bouquet covers the base of the basin while the walls bear a design of undulating motifs. The artist has lingered over the details in the bird’s plumage and the seeds of the flowers.
This large flat-bottomed vessel was once used as a washing basin for laundry, a necessity in any home. The lebrillo has since transcended its utilitarian role.
Its distinctive designs and lively colors make for stunning décor in the home or garden. Inspired by the Andalusian landscape, lebrillo often feature the granada or pomegranate, sunflowers, daisies, palms, peacocks and native songbirds.

Fajalauza in Green
Painted in a vivid green over white glaze, this wide-rimmed plate bears our most emblematic motif: granada or pomegranate.
According to some historians, the Romans named the city of Granada after the Latin granatum or pomegranate, a fruit-bearing tree abundant in the area. Others credit the phonetic evolution of the Arabic "gar-anat," meaning 'hill of pilgrims.'
The pomegranate grows well in arid conditions. Its tough skin protects it from drying, making it a perfect survival food that could feed caravans traveling long journeys.
The resilient fruit tree may have been a staple for the desert people who conquered Andalucía in the 8th century.
Now abundant in the region, the pomegranate has become an enduring symbol of Granada’s culture. Fajalauza ceramics pay homage to that heritage with myriad variations in design.

Fajalauza Plates in Blue
Fajalauza in Purple
The hand painted Estornino dinner plate in purple is just one example of Fajalauza's dedication to marrying artistry with functionality. This plate features a depiction of the estornino, or spotless starling, a songbird native to the region of Andalusia. The choice of this motif is a testament to the workshop's deep connection to the local environment and culture. The starling's graceful presence on the plate adds not only an aesthetic element but also a touch of regional identity.
The pomegranate tree is a recurring motif in Fajalauza ceramics since it is the very symbol of the city of Granada and holds cultural and historical significance in the region. Fajalauza's use of this motif pays homage to the rich heritage and traditions of Granada. Here the starling bird sits on a pomegranate branch bearing dropping flowers and buds.
Our commitment to preserving traditional craftsmanship techniques is evident in the careful and precise creation of these pieces. Each item is crafted by skilled artisans who have honed their expertise over generations. The meticulous attention to detail, such as the intricate pattern of seashells on the plate’s lip or the delicate rendering of the starling's features showcases the dedication to quality and artistry.
Fajalauza's ceramics, exemplified by the Estornino dinner plate, are a tribute to Granada's cultural and natural heritage. They not only encapsulate the region's beauty but also carry forward the legacy of traditional craftsmanship, making them highly sought-after pieces of art and functional items for homes and collectors alike.
